FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Cal. about 44. NSN. Bbl. 39 1/8" of dbl. taper oct. John Shuler was well-known quality rifle maker in Bucks County, PA (active 1800-1829) His distinctive signature "I. S" and engraved flourishes found on top flat of slightly swamped 39 ¼” octagonal barrel, brass blade front sight w/ fixed V notch rear sight. Brass mounted with 6 German silver inlays. Unmarked original flint lock, double set triggers. Full length curly maple stock w/ 3 iron keys with German silver escutcheons, pierced and engraved 4-piece patchbox. Other brass furniture includes crescent buttplate, toeplate, trigger guard, sideplate, thimble w/ engraved extension plate & nose cap. Hardwood ramrod is held by 2 faceted (check and see if faceted or not please) pipes. Vacant German silver oval thumb plate. Incise carving is found along bbl. channel & toeline as well as forward of lock & sideplate. A classic Shuler decorated rifle with no significant problems. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: photos & hand written collectors notes. CONDITION: metal has cleaned mottled gray appearance w/ light pitting becoming heaviest in breech area. Refinished stock has well repaired wrist break and presents nicely. Mechanics are functionable, bore is dark retaining strong rifling.
