APPROACHING "REGENT DIAMOND" QUALITY WITH SUPERB HIGH RELIEF GAME SCENE ENGRAVING. Cal. 30-06. S# 26661. Charles Daly, a partner in the New York firm Schoverling, Daly & Gales, had a vision of bringing high quality European sporting arms to the American shooter. The "Prussian" Dalys imported prior to WWII were mfg. by various firms in Suhl, Germany. These firearms combined the finest European craftsmanship w/ features designed to appeal to the discriminating North American firearms enthusiast. This exceptional Prussian rifle is built on a Mauser 98 action & very few examples are known today w/ Michael Petrov having only six rifles in his database. Most are plain, one is engraved w/ game scenes & scroll, but not in high relief, like this spectacular piece. It features exquisite full coverage of exceptionally well cut open shaded scroll surrounding deep relief game scene vignettes consisting of a bull & cow moose on front receiver ring, running whitetail buck on floorplate & grizzly on the trigger guard bow. Scenes are surrounded by full coverage arabesque scroll engraving w/ beaded highlights that extend to the breech section of the bbl., front right ramp, bolt shroud, & bolt handle. Rear receiver ring has "CHARLES DALY" marking inlaid in gold. Bbl. 25" light sporter weight. Top of bbl. has gold inlaid marking "Charles Daly Wittener Excelsior Steel". Bottom of bbl. is marked "333", a Suhl date code indicating March 1933 mfg. along w/ crown over B, U, G & E proofs over "SUHL" marking. Bolt is numbered to the rifle having a wing type safety & 2 checkered panels on bolt knob. Receiver, bolt & bottom metal feature a fine satin gray finish. Gold plated dbl. set triggers. Right side of action has side mounted scope base marked "PRUSSIA". Ramp mounted bead front sight w/ Lyman receiver sight. Classic style cheekpiece sporting stock of fancy European thin shell walnut having fiddle & burl figure w/ vivid dark streaking. Features include horn forearm tip w/ engraved & blued steel trapdoor grip cap. LOP: 13 5/8" over blue finished hand engraved steel trapdoor buttplate. Toeline of stock has oval silver name plate w/ initial "E". Narrow European leather sling is held on original swivels, front swivel is bbl. mounted. WEIGHT: 8 lbs., 3.5 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brass takedown cleaning rod & jags held in trapdoor butt. Heavy leather rifle case w/ side pouch for scope. Right side of case has gold marking "EGAN". Case has loose stitching w/ numerous scuffs & handling marks & missing flap for scope compartment. CONDITION: bbl. retains over 98% fine rust blued finish. Receiver, bottom metal & bolt retain over 95% satin finish showing hardened residue from protective grease coating. Stock has moderately worn oil finish showing scattered scratches, sm. dents & handling marks. Bore retains strong rifling. A superb rifle which would be the centerpiece of any collection of Charles Daly offerings. (20-208/DS). CURIO. $8,000-12,000.
