INGENIUS AND USEFUL SHOOTABLE TRY GUN BY D. GRAY
OF INVERNESS. Cal.12 Ga. S# 1908. Try guns are used to establish the dimensions needed for individual shooters to perform well before custom stocks are made. Many are lightly constructed, therefore; unsuitable for shooting. This robust example appears to be 1 of a kind & made by D. Gray & Company working in Inverness Scotland beginning in 1901. This gun probably dates from that period & is very well thought out having a bronze central knuckle w/ screw adj. for drop at heel & cast. There is another adj. at front portion of toeline for drop at comb. Length of pull & pitch are adjusted w/ screws on right side of buttstock stopping metal straps attached to butt section at appropriate distances. Maximum LOP is around 15 3/4" & minimum is 14". 30" Damascus bbls. are engraved "D. Gray Inverness." on slightly raised game rib w/ dolls head extension. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ Birmingham black powder proofs & 1989 London reproofs for 2 1/2" chambers. Casehardened boxlock action has short tang & no provision for safety. Action also features pivoting third fastener. Fences are well filed. Action is engraved w/ makers name on each side & line borders. S# is on trigger guard bow. Stock is of nicely marbled European walnut & butt is of checkered wood w/ hinged horn toe piece. Matching splinter forend w/ fancy metal tip has roller friction release. Bore diameters: left - .731, .027 (mod), right - .719, .004 (IC). Wall thickness: left - .028, right - .032. WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 8 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Green canvas leather trimmed vintage case w/ dark green cloth interior, has reproduction Atkin, Grant & Lang paper label in lid along w/ charge card & William Palmer Jones patent Try Gun instructions. Case contains what appears to be original T-handled adj. wrench & a key. CONDITION: bbls. retain nearly all of a re brown most likely done at time of reproof w/ fair definition to pattern. Action retains approx. 60% original casehardening color, grayed & browned at bottom sides. Floorplate & top lever retain about 80% of their original blue, trigger guard reblued. Stocks retain about 80% of their original rubbed oil finish. Bores are bright & shiny. Action is tight. Case canvas is discolored & stained. Leather has rubs. Straps & handle are good. Interior cloth is good w/ rubs & compressions, some restoration. A neat bit of Scottish history. D. Gray & Co. stopped gun making around 1988 & presently make telescopes. (19-5872/MGM48).
