INNOVATIVE & INTERESTING DOUBLE RIFLE BY ROBERT
SCHRADER INCORPERATING HIS UNIQUE ACTION & SAFETY/COCKING SYSTEM, ONCE THE PROPERTY OF A COUNT. Cal. 9.3 x 74 R. S# 27255. Bbl. 25 5/8". Robert Schrader of Gottingen developed a number of patents for rifles, shotguns, & drillings that were quite popular at the turn of the 19 to 20th centuries. His most famous is incorporated in this rifle w/ a combined cocking/opening "trigger on outside of trigger guard bow. Pushing forward opens the rifle. In its center position, rifle is uncocked & completely safe." pulling the trigger to the rear cocks the rifle. To return to safe position, simply pushing the cocking trigger forward again uncocks action. His other patent used in this rifle is the unique breeching system using trunions on sides of bbls. which engage heavy sides of the breech area. Bbls. are locked down by a Purdey type sliding bolt. This action is obviously very strong & is quite slim in profile, but "a bit heavy" when viewed from top or bottom. Bbls. are removed by undoing lg. screw on left side of action which allows side plate to be rotated down & out of position & then removed. Further removal of extractor actuating arm allows bbl. set to be lifted out. 25 5/8" Bbls. of chopper lump construction are fitted w/ full length flat matted rib. A 1 standing 1 folding leaf U-notch rear sight is dovetailed through & a brass bead front is longitudinally dovetailed into slightly raised front ramp. Rear portion of rib is cut for slide on scope mounting system. Top of breech section of bbls. is engraved "Robert Schrader Gottingen". Rear portion is engraved "GUSS" "STAHL" in front of lunate extensions that fit into recesses in action, completing the extremely strong lock up of this rifle. Sides of breech section are stamped w/ pre WWI German nitro proofs for 9.3 x 74 R cartridge. Ends of trunions are engraved "D. R. P." Case hardened action features bushed strikers & double triggers (both set). Action & sideplates are engraved w/ sprays & scroll w/in scroll borders. Front portion of trigger guard is semi relief inlaid in gold w/ a monogram "A.G." surmounted by the crown of a count. Trigger guard extension is of horn & it extends to a horn grip cap. Lightly streaked & figured dense European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 1/4" over ribbed horn buttplate & features sm. right hand cheekpiece, point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders at grip. A sling loop is on toeline, matching that on bbl. Matching splinter forend w/ schnabled tip has Deely release. MEASUREMENTS: DAH approx. 2 1/2". DAC approx. 1 1/2". Cast 3/8" off. WEIGHT: 7 lb. 12 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: this rifle won the "most innovative design" award presented by the German Gun Collectors Association at the 2014 Vintagers World Championship shoot (plaque included). CONDITION: very good. Bbls. retaining most of what appears to be their original blue. Action w/ traces of original case hardening color is mostly silver to gray. Stocks retain nearly all of an old oil refinish w/ a few light subsequent marks. Checkering has been cleaned up. Bores are fine to very fine, mostly shiny w/ strong rifling throughout (slight erosion at the throats). Action is very tight. Bbls. are on face. Set triggers work. This relatively light rifle built in a fairly powerful cartridge handles very well. (20-2382/MGM31). CURIO. $6,000-10,000.
