WITH FACTORY CONVERSION TO CENTERFIRE. Cal. 12 Ga. 2 1/2". S# 6258 (1862). Factory records indicate that this gun was made in 1862 has a breech loader; originally in pinfire. It is most likely that Purdey's converted it to centerfire with the addition of a .080 plate across breech face, braised in centerfire fences, conversion of locks to rebounding principle and with new hammers. The 29 7/8" two stripe Damascus bbls. are engraved "J. PURDEY" "314 1/2 OXFORD STREET" "LONDON" on narrow game rib. Bbl. flats have remnants of London black powder proofs. Lumps have been altered to remove early style extractor mechanism. Jones under lever action, with rounded bar, is fitted with peninsula back spring locks. Action and locks are engraved with 80% coverage well cut large shaded scroll within small scroll borders. Hammers have smaller matching scroll. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Straight grip buttstock is of dense, lightly marbled European walnut and measures 14 3/8" over steel buttplate with short spur. Flat top checkering is at grip and a small vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter forend with inlet steel tip is near fully checkered and attaches to bbls. with captive side bolt through shaped steel escutcheons. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS.: Bore Diameter: R: .749", L: .749". Restrictions: R: 0" (CYL), L: .003" (IC). Minimum Wall Thickness: R: .019", L: .022". STOCK: DAH: 2 9/16". DAC: 1 3/4". CAST: approx. 1/4" off. LOP: 14 3/8". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 8 oz. CONDITION: good as refurbished. Bbls. retaining most of an old rebrown with good definition to pattern. Action and locks are gray to brown patina over considerable frosting. Engraving still clear. Hinge pin has been replaced and area shows considerable filing and cleaning to bright silver. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish with numerous marks and scratches, checkering has been recut. Bores are shiny with one or two scattered pits. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Locks are good. Under lever lock detent is out of whack and care must be taken when closing bbls. to ensure proper alignment. (01-20832/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
