INTRIGUING L.C. SMITH GRADE 2E 16 GAUGE LIVE BIRD

GUN WITH UNUSUAL, PERHAPS PROTOTYPE FEATURES. Cal. 16 Ga., 2 5/8", chambers. S# 8518. Bbls. 28". Made w/ matted concave top rib w/ twin ivory beads & has rib legend "HUNTER ARMS CO. FULTON, NY". Point pattern checkered splinter forend w/ blued banjo type roll release has triangular ebony tip. Bbl. flats w/ SN & crown steel trademark ahead of flats. Bbl. lug w/ very unusual screw at head which is the first of its type this cataloger has observed. This screw is an ejector retaining screw at the back of the lug which Hunter Arms must have tried & found to be too labor intensive for their needs. Case hardened action w/ side locks engraved w/ light flourishes of scroll have quail on left standing in grass, woodcock on right in circle & "L.C. SMITH" at front of side locks. Bottom of frame lightly scroll engraved. Blued trigger guard w/ burst of scroll on bow & S# at center of long tang which is lightly engraved in geometric design. Gun made w/ Hunter One single selective trigger, automatic ejectors, no safety. Top of frame w/ light flourishes of scroll & two piece top tang w/ star burst engraved where safety slide would have been if this gun was built w/ safety. This gun built w/ rotary locking bolt & bushed strikers. Straight grip buttstock checkered in two point pattern through the wrist terminates w/ an aging No-Shoc brand pad. Measurements: Right: .655"., choke: .008". Left: .661", choke: .032". Minimum wall thickness: Right: .032", left: .036". DAC: 1 3/8". DAH: 2". LOP: 13 3/4" from rear position Hunter One trigger. WEIGHT: 6 lbs., 12 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: housed in a green canvas leather appointed case w/ brass furniture & green felt interior w/ reproduction leather makers trade label on top of inside. CONDITION: excellent as refurbished. Bbls. retain more than 90% of a light brown rust reblue w/ some areas of cold blue added. Forearm w/ crisp checkering & banjo release which retain most of their restored finish. Action has been competently re-case colored & retains nearly all of that finish. Buttstock is sound & retains most of what appears to be an older restored finish w/ checkering chased in a few areas & thinned at grip point. Pad appears to be a period of use addition & is beginning to darken & harden. Bores are bright & shiny. Top lever will not hold open, otherwise mechanics are functional. Trigger works. Gun is tight & on face though the forend shows some minor gapping off of the bbl. Case is very good w/ only minor stains & rub marks. An interesting, perhaps prototype or transition gun which could make a very nice shooter & collectible Smith. (22-1067/JSL). CURIO. $4,000-6,000.
