Idaho Wolf Hide
The Foundation for Wildlife Management is an Idaho based conservation organization that works with the Idaho Department of Fish & Game to promote and implement effective recovery efforts to restore big game populations throughout the state.
For example, in the Lolo Region of Idaho, the elk population in 1995 numbered 16,000 animals. Today, that number is less than 1,000!! Why? Because in 1995, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released 11 wolves into Central Idaho and 4 wolves in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Today, there are more than 1000 wolves and 100 breeding pairs roaming these areas. Some will argue that the actual number of wolves to be three times that number!!
Since 2016, the Foundation for Wildlife Management has removed more than 700 wolves from these wildlife areas but the wolves continue to re-populate in alarming numbers. In fact, wolves reproduce at a rate of 40% annually.
The Foundation has asked for GSCO’s help.
Trapping wolves is expensive. For the 2019-20 season, trappers and hunters receive $500 for every legally harvested wolf. But in the Panhandle of Idaho, the reimbursement is $1,000 per wolf. The Foundation has expended hundreds of thousands of dollars during the past two years in support of the reimbursement program. But it’s not enough.
Tonight, Doug and Shelly Sayer, both longtime GSCO supporters, have donated an Idaho wolf hide to GSCO to help us help them raise more monies in support of this very important wolf management program.
