Indian Wars-Era U.S. Springfield Model 1884 "Trapdoor" Infantry Rifle, with Sling, #498851, .45-70 CF cal., 32.6" round barrel with block-blade front sight (also a bayonet lug) and Buffington rear (marked "R" for Rifle) marked "V/P/(eaglehead)/P" and "I" at breech; trapdoor receiver marked "US/Model/1884" at hinge, serial number at breech; flat lockplate marked "(spread-wing federal eagle)" and "U.S./Springfield" ahead of hammer; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with front sling swivel, curved buttplate marked "US" at top, 2 spring-retained bands (upper with stacking swivel), nosecap, slotted button-tip ramrod. Oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1886-91. Condition is good retaining traces of finish but generally smooth gray-brown gunmetal (bit of beginning rust/light roughness at top of barrel) with good edges and markings. Stock is sound lacking inspector cartouche, has lightly-scratched markings at left, illegible initials at right, minor marks and added varnish. Action is crisp, bore shows overall moderate erosion, good rifling. Russet leather sling is sound and smooth, with "Jno. Keiler. No. 54 C.F." scratched into lower surface. Est.: $750-$1,000. (Antique)
