Indian Wars Era U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle, #98555 (latter 3 digits obscured by black powder pitting), .45-70 Gov't. cal., 29.5'' barrel is marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''I '' at breech, fitted with a block-blade front sight (also serves as a bayonet lug) and later Buffington adjustable rear sight (marked ''R'' for Rifle); flat lockplate is marked ''(spread eagle)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield/1873'' beneath trapdoor latch; steel furniture including two spring-retained barrel bands (top with stacking swivel), two-piece triggerguard, buttplate marked ''US'' on top tang, nosecap, slotted button-head cleaning rod; one-piece oil-finished walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1873-77 in quantity of approx. 3,000 guns. Condition is very good, the barrel a smooth brownish-blue patina, balance of the metal a dark gunmetal gray showing traces of case hardening, rear triggerguard tang with glossy blue, hammer missing its mounting screw. All markings are clear. Stock is smooth and solid lacking proofmarks due to light sanding and shows scattered nicks and dings. Action is strong and smooth; bore is clean with distinct rifling.
