Indian Wars Era U.S. Springfield Model 1873 ''Trapdoor'' Rifle, with sling, #399772, .45-70 Gov't CF cal., 32-5/8'' barrel, with integral block-blade front sight and sliding-leaf rear sight (correctly marked ''R'' for Rifle), marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' at left breech; trapdoor breechblock marked ''U.S./Model/1873'' at hinge; flat lockplate has a spread-wing eagle clutching olive branches to the left of ''U.S./Springfield'' below trapdoor latch; steel furniture including two spring-retained barrel bands (top with sling swivel), two-piece triggerguard (with sling swivel), and curved buttplate marked ''U.S.'' at top screw; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Condition is very good. All steel parts show a smooth blue-brown patina, with traces of blue in protected areas of barrel, case colors to underside of breechblock, and beginning rust on buttplate. Stock is sound, showing the typical marks and dings of military use, two or three minor losses, and a strong ''SWP/1884'' cartouche of Springfield Master Armorer Samuel W. Porter opposite the lock. O.D. green web sling is a later addition. Action is strong; bore is clean with deep rifling. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
