Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine, #182299 (star), .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 22" tapered round barrel, standard carbine sights and markings; receiver with "low-arch" breechblock marked "U.S./Model/1873" at hinge has step at barrel juncture. Oil-stained carbine halfstock has long comb, large clipped-corner "SWP/1881" cartouche of inspector Samuel W. Porter, and sling ring/bar at left, "X" and encircled "P" proof at belly, 2-pc. trigger guard without swivel, curved buttplate marked "US" with sliding door for segmented cleaning rod (not present), single band with stacking swivel. Mfg'd 1881. Condition is very good retaining good traces of barrel blue (else smooth brown with spot of knackering at right), 75% original blue to lockplate, hammer, guard, buttplate, else gray gunmetal with sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound with sharp markings, generally light age and use marks (heavier at forend), nice color and finish. Action is crisp, bore is bright with frosting toward muzzle and sharp rifling.
