Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle, #402912, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 29.5" round barrel has usual breech markings, block-blade front sight (also bayonet lug) and Buffington long-range rear (marked "R" for Rifle); receiver breechblock is marked "US/Model/1884" at hinge, serial number at tang; flat lock has usual markings; steel trigger guard with swivel, buttplate marked "US", 2 bands (top with stacking swivel), nosecap, slotted button-tip ramrod. Oil-stained walnut fullstock with "SWP" inspector's cartouche at left wrist. Mfg'd ca. 1886-91. Condition is good retaining traces of original blue under scattered oxidation/discoloration, darkened case colors, else moderate roughness, very good edges and markings. Stock is sound with 2 shallow scrapes at right comb, 1" crack at rear lock screw, else smooth with faint cartouche. Action is crisp, frosted bore has moderate erosion toward muzzle, good rifling.
