with Virginia City, Nevada Mining history illustrated front cover of Colt collection's magazine winter 2017. Article entitled "The Colt Model" 1877 of Hugh Lamb Virginia City mine foreman by Bob Butterfield and considered by his estate. This lightening is nickel plated and inscribed on the backstrap "Hugh Lamb" in genuine to the period script and the front sight is set back professional when BBL shortened to 2" from 3-1/2 probably by Kitteridge in Ohio where was shipped on July 6, 1880, this Colt is named "The Consolidated Mine" Colt in the collecting fraternity. A historic archive of letter, photo's holster, watch with chains, cigar case, shaving mug, cold match safe, cards, silver ingot and other artifacts accompany this museum quality display that is superior to any Nevada mining history pistol we know to exist in any private or museum collection.
A) The holster is a rare cummerbund style favored by messengers, Wells Fargo agents, lawmen, and gunfighters in the 19th century. The holster has 3 buckles and is 4-3/4W x 31" in length. Two pouches with buckles are for letters, bank notes, or coins 8"W. The holster is fitted to accept this 2" Thunderer by the holster maker. a pocket for watch and chain also is featured. The condition is good to very good and in my opinion was custom made in San Francisco or Northern California by a saddle maker or leathersmith as it has a California style and is 100% professionally made during 1880's by an expert. Condition is good to very good and wear.
B) Match safe inscribed "High Lamb" mounted with gold quart 2 - unmarked as to gold or the maker.
C) Box Hinge large size pocket watch - dial marked "Cummings & Son San Francisco, CAL". Gold filled case with chain and fob containing cigar cutter (gold filled also) Faitys monarch marked case - patent 1884 #448782. Movement marked cumings and San Francisco, #43015 with no other info. other than safety pinion. This company was known for high quality swiss movements marketed on under their name. Runs well with with clean movement in very good condition.
D) Finely hand engraved silver plated cigar case for 3 - 5-3/4 medium size cigars unmarked 3rd quarter 19th century.
E) Personalized high grade hand-painted porcelain shaving mug "Hugh Lamb" on the front with gold accents and florals, marked Will and Fink, 269 market st, SF and maker marked H+C. Has breaks and repair to finger ring.
F.) Photographic and letter archive documenting the life and career of Hugh Lamb and his employment as supervisor/foreman of the historic consolidated mine of Virginia City Nevada. I would definitely rate this as a treasure trove of Nevada mining history that is equal to or superior to what is on display at major Nevada Institutions or museums. A letter dated June 1878 indicating lamb was in San Francisco giving update on activities of the mine. 27 other letters are included and one is from Governor's office, Carson City, concerning letter of introduction for J.W. Adams obtaining employment at the mine. Other letters requesting employment at not "too hot" a level. Letter from boarding house owner who wants help collecting lawful debt from minor who is a renter because he spends "all his money at gambling tables or Hore Houses". Letter from James Fain sending $50 draft as Christmas present, a letter from saloon keeper warning two employees he fired were making threats on Hugh's life and other interesting letters concerning his life and activities in mining. Photographs of Hugh Lamb, crew of mine, mine tour group, family, mine wife, daughters, his home and other structures, friends, babies many on Virginia City photographers cards. All original sepia tone photos off original negative. Over 50 total many I'd on back in what we presume is the hand of Hugh Lamb (Note offers of over 1000 each on mining crow photo's that are inscribed in pen Virginia City June 14,1888. In conclusion, I will categorically state that I know of no other Colt pistol with such an extensive and impressive group of supporting history to an important Nevada mining individual in the 19th century. Condition - The revolver remains in good to very good condition with the majority of the original nickel finish showing even loss & aging, good markings, sharp grips with minor hairline crack on side, matching numbers, full etched panel.
