“J. C. ROBERTS MOUNTED OFFICER SWORD.

29.75” blade with French maker marks, model 1850 style rose pattern hilt, carved horn grip, nicely inscribed in cross hatched letters “J C ROBERTS”. Associated scabbard is for cavalry saber though several inches longer than sword, it still fits adequately, and Confederates used whatever they could find. There is no history associated other than coming from old Midwest collection. The scabbard is unusual with the sculptured drag more common to CS manufacture, but few Confederate makers of iron mounted scabbards. Regardless, Union officers would not likely have carried such a mismatch. On the other hand, a Confederate may have. There are 10 officers named JC Roberts listed in database, 3 are Union, one is 1st PA cav. 7 are CS and only one cavalry officer “John C. Roberts” who served in 14th & 20th Texas cavalry. It’s a long shot, but possible its his sword. CONDITION: good to very good overall. (02-17661/JS). $800-1,200.
