Cal. 52. NSN. Bbl. 8" oct. to rnd. bbl. w/ faceted transition & smoothbore. Sm. German silver blade front sight surrounded by engraved sunburst. Top flat has maker's name "J. KUNZ". Engraved trade lock & hammer marked "LONDON / WARRANTED". Bolster, breech end of bbl. & top tang have foliate hand engraving. Rnd. butt walnut stock held by 2 wedges. Front wedge has oval German silver escutcheons, rear wedge has faceted rectangular wedges. German silver thumb plate. Brass trigger guard w/ fancy finial having floral engraving on bow. Hardwood ramrod w/ patch puller held by faceted brass thimble & single pipe. Attributed to Jacob Kunz of Philadelphia, Early American Gunsmiths by Henry J Kauffman lists "Germantown, Road above 2nd. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Robinsons Original Annual Director, 1817)". CONDITION: bbl. & lock show a mottled gray brown patina w/ scattered spots of light pitting. Oct. part of bbl. have dents on edges. Brass shows a mild patina. Stock has lightly worn finish showing scratches & marks w/ sm. chips around lock plate. Good mechanics. Dark rusty bore.
