J.M. MARLIN BALLARD FALLING BLOCK RIFLE.

Cal. 38-55. S# 17809. Bbl. 30" octagon having rocky Mountain brass blade front sight and elevator adjustable rear (missing elevator). Mfg. prior to 1881 as indicated by "J.M. Marlin" receiver marking (not Marlin Firearms Company; 1882-1891); 17000 serial number most often listed as change point yet this rifle is approaching 18000. Case colored action (1.263" wide and octagonal profile at top front) has internal extractor. Appears to be No. 4 Perfection Rifle variation but with unusual buttstock (possible replacement) that is straight gripped with trapdoor buttplate; well fitted but no compartment under door. Matching numbered barrel and receiver extension for stock attachment. CONDITION: good plus general appearance with about 40% remaining case colors. Good original blued finish with high edge wear on barrel plus marks resembling those of pipe wrench jaws about 11" forward of receiver (just in front of previous forend). Buttstock may be replacement from some military rifle. Slight gap on right side where stock meets action that is proud of metal as if caused by impact to right side at this point; very good fit on left. Bore close to very good with light wear and cleaned faint pitting. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (01-21293/NW). ANTIQUE. $500-750.
