J. Tarratt & Sons Full-Stock Percussion Hawken Rifle, # NVSN, approx. .50 cal., 36.5" heavy octagon barrel, brown and color case hardened finish. Smooth hardwood full-stock with brass nose cap, tubes, hardware, and crescent buttplate. Smoothed dovetailed brass blade front sight and wide "U"-notch rear sight. Lightly engraved lock is marked, "J. TARRATT & SONS" and features double set-triggers and exaggerated trigger guard with finger rest. Manufactured in the mid-19th century. Rifle is in very good overall condition, with barrel going to a mottled brown patina, with some spots of light surface erosion, and sharp edges. There is an additional dovetail at 3.5" from the muzzle filled with brass. Lock shows darkened color case hardened finish, with light scroll and game scene engraving, showing old erosion from powder exposure. Nipple shows heavy rust and the face of the hammer shows damage, missing a portion of the tip. Brass trigger guard has gone to a pleasing patina. Stock is in very good condition, with dark striping added, showing smoothing and age related minor marks. Action functions, holding at full-cock only, and the set-trigger functions intermittently. Bore is dark with light rust and visible rifling. J. Tarratt & Sons are a subject of debate, with some attributing their locks to an English firm who manufactured them for import. Others believe Tarratt & Sons were an unlocated American maker of Hawken & Plains rifles in the 19th century. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)
