NEWER STEEL BARRELS BY COGSWELL & HARRISON. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 5/8". S# 8575 (1871). 30" Dovetailed steel bbls. are engraved “COGSWELL & HARRISON NEW BOND ST.” & “226 STRAND LONDON.” on narrow game rib. Bbl. flats stamped w/ London Nitro proofs for 2 1/2" chambers. Bottoms of bbls. stamped w/ Cogswell & Harrison SN “41866” which corresponds to production date of 1907. It is interesting to note that the old style Purdey extractor system is retained. Rnd. bodied top lever Purdey action fitted w/ island type backspring locks w/ rnd. bodied serpentine rebounding hammers. Action engraved w/ near full coverage very sm. & exceptionally well cut shaded scroll as most likely done by head Purdey engraver James Lucas. Top lever engraved “PATENT”, locks are engraved “PURDEY” and bottom of action is engraved “PURDEY’S PATENT”. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Gun was number 1 of a pair & is engraved “NO. 1” on water table. Straight grip buttstock of well marbled & light figured European walnut measures 14" over ribbed wood butt. Flat top point pattern checkering is around grip & a vacant silver oval is on toeline. Matching fully checkered splinter forend w/ shaped steel tip attaches to bbls. w/ captive side bolt through shaped & engraved steel escutcheons. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .739", L .740". Restriction: R .014" (LIGHT MOD), L .027" (MOD). Min. Wall Thickness: R .022", L .009" in 2" area toward bottom, 8" behind muzzle, otherwise mostly .012". STOCK: DAH: 2 3/8". DAC: 1 5/8". LOP: 14". CAST: neutral. WEIGHT: 6 lb. 6 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: black plastic case. CONDITION: good as refurbished, bbls. retaining nearly all of a good quality reblack, action & locks cleaned to light to dark gray. Bottom of action shows a considerable number of striations. Stocks retain nearly all of an old oil refinish. Checkering haphazardly recut, especially on forend. Bbls. are bright & shiny w/ evidence of dent removal in right bbl. about 15" from muzzle w/ other dent removal & later rivelling associated with thin spot in left bbl. about 9" behind muzzles. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Locks are good. Right lock has very heavy. main spring, most likely replaced, but functions correctly. (01-22016/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
