JAPANESE ARMY KYU-GUNTO.
Kyu-gunto of this form were generally used from 1883 until 1945. They became popular during the Russo-Japanese War and remained in service until the close of WWII. Overall length: 39”. Blade length: 24 3/8”. Blade has a straight hamon and a 2-piece copper habaki. The nakago is unsigned and has 2 mekugi-ana. The tsuka is gilded brass with white same and a gold-plated wire wrap. There is a 10-petal cherry blossom on either side of the grip and a silver seal that appears to feature 2 rows of overlapping leaves on the backstrap. Saya is chrome plated iron. CONDITION: blade has a few tiny nicks to the edge. Tsuka shows light wear, as does the saya. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18421/BF). $700-1,000.
