JAPANESE ARMY KYU-GUNTO.
Kyu-gunto of this form were generally used from 1883 until 1945. They became popular during the Russo-Japanese War and remained in service until the close of WWII. Overall length: 37”. Blade length: 26 7/8”. Blade has no perceivable hamon. The habaki is brass and has 2 Japanese characters engraved upon it. The nakago has a 7-character signature on one side and a 4-character signature on the other. There are 2 mekugi-ana. The tsuka is gilded brass with white same and a gold-plated wire wrap. There is a 10-petal cherry blossom on either side of the grip and a silver seal that appears to feature a central blossom surrounded by leafed branches. There is a single seppa between the tsuka and the top of the guard. Saya is chrome plated. There is a black knot attached to the guard. CONDITION: blade has a nice polish. Tsuka shows light to moderate wear and is a bit loose. Saya shows light wear. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18403/BF). $600-900.
