JAPANESE MINE TRAINING AID SET, NO.2.

A fascinating inside look at the perils our GIs faced during WWII. This set is unique & intriguing at first glance at the wood transit chest that houses it. Designed for our engineering units to prepare them for identifying & working w/ likely encountered Japanese ordnance in the Pacific theater of operations. In its entirety, weighing approx. 40 lbs., it contains multiple examples of Japanese mines, fuses & grenades w/ enough moving parts to safely & accurately learn recognition, disarming & disposal of these likely adversaries. It appears that only 592 sets were available for distribution, this one complete w/ the original technical bulletin “TB ENG 79”. The lid of the transit chest, measuring 39"x13"x5.5", is stenciled on the outside “MINE TRAINING AID” / “SET NO.2, JAPANESE.” / “SNL SET NO. 386-02”. On the lid interior two printed keys, the first a translation of Japanese inscriptions & the 2nd an 8"x7.5" photograph of the kit contents. Included in the kit, each in their designated spots, are the following: Type 93 anti tank mine, Type 93 fuse, bar (yardstick mine) w/ 4 fuses, Type 97 hand grenade, Type 3 landmine w/ fuse, Type 99 magnetic mine & 2 original copies of the 24 page TB ENG 79 War Department Technical Bulletin dated June of 1945. All items in this kit were U.S. mfg. to accurately resemble their original counterparts right down to the nomenclature. CONDITION: all items contained appear to remain free moving & functional after all these years. The crate itself is still sturdy w/ original functioning metal clamps & hinges. Even the stenciling on exterior surfaces still remains legible. (02-16281/JZ). $1,200-1,800.
