JAPANESE SWORD, FLAG, HONOLULU NEWSPAPER, &
FOLDING KNIFE. 1) SWORD. Overall length: 39 1/2". Blade length: 30 3/4". Plated blade has a single narrow hi with a simulated, wavy hamon. Gilded brass hilt showing a 10-petal cherry blossom on either side of the backstrap. There is a 3-petal, silver mon at the base of the backstrap. Grip appears to be wire-wrapped horn. Plated metal scabbard. CONDITION: blade shows some bubbling to finish. Hilt retains traces of gilding. Grip is complete but wire is not. Scabbard has bubbling & peeling to the surface. 2) FLAG. A Japanese Hinomaru flag in silk measuring approx. 44” x 28”. CONDITION: flag shows some discoloration & staining, but no major damage. 3) FOLDING KNIFE. Overall length: 9 1/2", with the primary blade & the lanyard ring extended. Knife has black iron outer surfaces with a folding blade, saw blade, & awl. CONDITION: generally light wear overall. 4) NEWSPAPER. A newspaper titled “Honolulu Star-Bulletin 1st EXTRA” dated “DECEMBER 7, 1941”. The headline, in giant letters, is “WAR! OAHU BOMBED BY JAPANESE PLANES”. CONDITION: newspaper shows yellow discoloration but minimal damage. (02-20952/BF). $300-500.
