JAPANESE TAKEDOWN TYPE II PARATROOP RIFLE.
Cal. 7.7 Jap. S# 17648. Bbl. 25.25". Scarce takedown paratroop rifle mfg. at Nagoya arsenal. S# matches on receiver, bolt, extractor & bbl. lug. Assembly number 522 appears on left side of bbl. below rear sight, on left side of takedown assembly in front & rear. Receiver is marked on left rail w/ Nagoya arsenal marking. Mum has been removed, leaving Japanese characters for “Type 2”. Straight bolt handle w/ oval knob. Checkered, notched safety knob. Rear sight graduated to 1500m w/ antiaircraft wings. Inverted V front sight w/ protective ears. Hardwood stock set. Original forend was cut underneath lower band & original bbl. bands, forend tip & handguard were removed. Forend tip, handguard & upper band replaced w/ hobbyist gunsmith type workmanship & materials. Lower band is from later type rifle, made w/ out provision for monopod attachment. Original buttstock has had sling swivel removed & inletted area has been filled w/ wood. Original cup type buttplate has been replaced w/ shop made flat, steel buttplate. CONDITION: buttstock has been refinished w/ loss of wood in buttplate area. Has light wear & handling marks. Rear portion of forend w/ grasping grooves has original finish w/ staining & wear. Added wood has wear, staining & scratches. Metal retains 60% original blue w/ thinning & wear, turning gray & patina. Replacement bbl. bands have notable worn finish. Transverse forend screw in forward attachment block is not present & screw retaining nut in upper band is not present. Good, shiny bore. (20-1932/RW). CURIO. $700-900.
