Cal. 45 ACP. S# 70G42473. Bbl. 5" standard Series 70 w/ throating & special match link having wider base than body & fitted to legs. Mfg. 1973 plus accurized & enhanced by John Giles of Odessa, FL who was one of the premier customizers of Colts from 1950s to very early 1990s; passed away in 2006 at age 92. He held 17 patents for Model 1911 enhancements along w/ separate classification at Camp Perry in his name. Deemed by many "The Best" enhancer of Model 1911s. Slide has his patented grooved rib w/ undercut target front sight & corresponding square notched adj. rear. Unique aspect of his rib is its method of attachment utilizing rear sight dovetail for recoil control & single attachment screws front & rear. Special rear sight designed w/ multiple adjustments using spring pins & detent notches on circumference of adjustment wheels rather than coil spring detents. Superb slide to frame lapped fitment w/ detail to all engaging surfaces including breech face. Lapping fit to bbl. lugs & bushing plus attention to bottom bevel of firing pin retainer. Frame w/ grooved arched mainspring housing plus standard safeties & slide stop. Checkered walnut grips w/ pronounced thumbrest on left. Aluminum trigger of short length w/ added Ace style trigger shoe yielding ideal overall trigger length. Even recoil guide enhanced by smoothing of legs & bullet shaped front as used on Gold Cups. Front strap impact stippled for secure grip. Trigger pull simply exceeds expectations; superb bullseye pistol whereby Giles works were known to produce 5/8" groups at 50 yards from Ransom rest. As superb a pistol as it is, it retains common points such as: standard spur hammer, no beavertail safety, no flare to magwell, standard ejector (not extended) & unaltered ejection port (not flared & lowered). MAGS: 1 Colt 7 rd. electro engraved on side of body "HS 45". CONDITION: very good plus overall appearance w/ very faint beginning thinning at some high points plus sm. area of pitting on left side of slide between legend & muzzle. Light marks on grips. Interior has in the white areas due to fitting plus no evidence of refinishing yet stippled area on front strap is dark; likely from touch up bluing. Great vintage bullseye pistol ready for more target shooting; near excellent bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Alan Bradley Shepherd. (21-3460/NW). MODERN. $1,200-1,800.
