Very desirable and early inscribed Bowie knife marked “C. Congreve Shefield” with W.R. and crown (Circa 1830-1837). Also marked “Celebrated Hunting Knife”. Rare original scabbard with German silver mounts andgrooved tip. The blade is from very thick stock measuring over ¼” thick. The blade measures 9 ½” and the knife measures 13 5/8” overall. The blade is 1 5/8” at the widest point with 3” clip to early point. The pommel shows a period silver or German silver cap that is script inscribed in period scroll “Nelson Dewey” who was a Wisconsin pioneer and its 1st state Governor who remained a driving political force from 1836 when heentered Wisconsin till 1889 when he died poor but honest. The original grip is checkered ivory showing contemporary style and genuine aging. The blade is good with normal aging but full dimensions. Scabbard retains throatand hanger and is good to very good. An early and sophisticated Bowie with American identification to significant statesman. Good to very good with normal aging and stains on grip. Est.: $9000-$18,000
