JXM-20 ORIGINAL COLT TEXAS PATERSON #151
Original and superbly documented Colt Texas Paterson, S/N 151 with a 7 ½” barrel in .36 caliber percussion showing unbroken full address and square back cylinder. All matching serial numbers remaining in very good plus original condition with considerable original blue finish and nearly all the cylinder scene slightly light. Probably one of the original 200 sold to the state for re-issue to Texas Rangers. This pistol was purchased by iconic collector and author John S. DuMont from a Mr. Rhead in Florida in 1946 whose ancestor was a Texas Sheriff. In 1950 this Paterson was sold to Tom Allen of Houston and he sold it to Ben Ames Williams the author in 1954. Ben sold the Colt to Red Jackson who sold it to Herb Glass Sr. Mr. Glass sold it to Harry Knode founder of the American Society of Arms Collectors. Knode sold it to Jack Dutton of San Antonio who sold it to Dr. Shultz whose heirs consigned it to Little John’s Auction Service in 2000. Sold at auction to a prominent Texas collector and then sold to a North East industrialist in 2016 who has consigned it due to a collection realignment to automobiles in 2019. A large portfolio documenting this provenance with a signed letter from Herb Glass appraising this pistol dated Sept 24, 2001 is included. Also copy of advertisement in T.G.C.A. magazine in 1955 picturing this Paterson under Herb Glass’s advertisement stating “Texas Paterson 151 Its first home in Texas and the property of a Texas sheriff”.
Note: I John R. Gangel have owned, brokered and auctioned over 90 Texas Paterson’s in my 50 year career which includes S/N 1, the best engraved Paterson S/N 602, Sam Colt’s and the majority of important Texas Colt Paterson’s. Number 151 has always been 1 of my favorites as there was never a more honest or well documented Texas Paterson (Herb Glass and recognized Paterson experts all agree). Museum quality. Est.: $125,000-$250,000
