James Bown Percussion Halfstock Plains Rifle, NVSN, approx. .40 cal., 34'' heavy octagonal barrel turned round at muzzle for bullet starter, with associated brass and copper fluted design powder flask. Made circa mid-19th Century. Marked on top barrel flat ''James Bown/Pittsburgh'', lockplate with engraved scene of hunter and flying ducks framed by foliage, but otherwise unmarked. Double set triggers, German silver triggerguard with scrolled tang, matching fancy patch box with old patches inside, matching crescent buttplate with fancy toeplate, small ''winged'' German silver sideplate opposite lock, matching barrel wedge escutcheons and rear ramrod thimble, pewter (or lead) nose cap. Brass dovetailed front sight with long, low blade; iron buckhorn style rear sight with elongated tang covering original sight slot with dovetailed plug. Barrel tang was once fitted for a tang sight, now missing. Varnished, artificially striped walnut stock with checkering at wrist, carved cheekpiece, plain hickory ramrod held by two iron thimbles. Condition is good to very good with a smooth brown patina to iron parts and clean German silver furniture. Stock is solid and smooth, shows age, wear and a few minor marks and scratches. A stoutly built rifle made especially for rugged duty on the Western American frontier. Flask measures 8'' overall and retains much original finish with a couple small dents and compression in the fluted design on reverse. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique) (Joe Poyer collection)
