Japanese Aikuchi Tanto Koshirae with Kozuka. Beautiful Aikuchi type Japanese tanto koshirae (no blade) done in black lacquer with gold overlaid coiled dragon menuki, and a large shakudo dragon on the saya. The tsuka is a ribbed design, the menuki attached with pine tar. The saya is smooth with a rounded end, black horn koiguchi and kurikata, brass three-piece shitodome eyelets and a black woven sageo cord attached. These type of mounts do not use a tsuba guard. There is a pocket on the back side of the saya with a kozuka, but no ko-gatana, the kozuka is retained with a light spring clip (removable). The kozuka is shakudo with a nanako panel and high relief gold overlaid and shakudo dragons. It is not signed. There is a wooden tsunagi and wood habaki holding the mount together. The mounts are circa the 20th Century, the menuki and kozuka look like older antique pieces, but the dragon on the saya looks modern made. A nice rig for display. Comes with a brocade storage bag and cord. Condition is very good, the lacquer on the saya has a few chips at the tip and around the kozuka pocket, some minor scratches and light dings. The tsuka is in very nice condition. The menuki show light wear and soiling. The kozuka body is bowed in the middle, and the gold dragon shows wear to the gold metal overlaid surface. There are numerous scratches and small dings to the body of the kozuka. Est.: $600-$800.
