Japanese Edo Period Jingasa Helmet.
estimated Mid-Late Edo period. Light weight military helmets. Made from layers of paper glued together, and then lacquered to hold the shape. This one was worn by shigaru (infantry) and low-ranked soldiers. Beautifully hand painted with fire breathing dragons, the Mon consists of six gold toned balls in a circle with one in the middle. Maroon tassel attached to the rear. Full liner, hemp padded red cushion liner secured by leather. Gloss brown on the exterior with matte gold Mon and brass mounts to top, the interior is finished in bright red lacquer. There are some cracks to the lacquer, with a couple of small chips.
