Early Edo period (1603-1868) inlaid iron Momonari (Pearh shaped) helmet (Kabuto) The Edo period, also known as the Tokugawa period, was a time of significant change and development in Japan, spanning from 1603 to 1868. Richly patinated russet iron bowl of Momonari form with central raised flange,inlaid in gilt and silver dragons and clouds. Created by two wrought-iron plates, riveted together. The dragon and cloud inlays are damascened (nunome zogan). The dragons contort themselves in a tormented environment of clouds and flames. Four-lame-black-lacquered iron neck guards strung with blue silk cord. the woven liner is present but has separated from the front interior of helmet. riveted iron visor, has a Haraidate fore crest holder for Maedate. The left lower neck guard has separated. Over very good condition for it's age. The detail to the dragons is superb. A true piece of art. Comes with wooden display stand.
