A really nice captured Japanese WW2 Type 98 Shin-Gunto Army Officer's sword. beautiful 27' is very bright with almost all of its polish, some minor scratches and a couple of minute nicks on the edge, you can't really see them but can feel them ,blade tip (Kissaki) is perfect. Overall length 38 1/2'.The blade mountings are the classic later WWII era Type 98 Army Shin-Gunto style, brass with gilt accents. Rounded tsuba with brass coated Imperial Army cherry blossom Menuki (grip decoration), and a nice Kabuto-Gane (Pommel Cap). The cross guard and pommel cap have matching cherry blossom motifs, which are also found on the steel scabbard fittings, and the fuchi (grip collars). There are 4 Seppa (spacers) around the cross guard to keep the fit tight, and all are inletted for the scabbard lock. Locks perfectly into the scabbard. The blade collar (Habaki) looks to be brass The handle (tsuka) has an nice faux stingray skin (Sa-Me) grip, which is in great shape. It has a complete Ito (cloth binding), which shows little wear. The cherry blossom Menuki under the wrap show some handling wear. The single bamboo securing peg is still present. The Scabbard (saya) is steel and in very nice condition,with all of the original paint intact and has the correct single hanger loop of the Type 98 style. The top fitting is inletted for the scabbard lock on the hilt. Blue and brown for company or warrant (junior) grade officer's attached. The one-hole tang is signed with NijI-mei two kanji characters on the Omote side (the outward-facing side of the tang when worn).
