This Japanese Sword Type 98 Army Shin-Gunto is an excellent example. The Shinogi-Zukuri 26 1/2" blade is in a very strong excellent condition, nice and clean with beautiful Gunome style Hamon/Temper line. (irregular, repeating pattern of rounded waves). The blade is seated through a eight-piece closed tsuba, with the tang secured with a bamboo peg. The tang is marked with a four Mei signature with black painted symbols on the reverse. The military-style hilt is typical officer quality, complete, and all original. It is constructed of a wood base, covered in ray skin with the traditional 3 brass cherry blossoms all wrapped in original brown cloth tape with a twist. The kabuto-gane, (pommel) is copper/brass. The scabbard (saya) is steel-based, and retains about 70% of the original brown paint, with no dents, correct fittings in place, spring clip retention system is employed, works fine the scabbards koiguchi (Throat) is missing one screw so there is a little play. Japanese Army Colonal Sword tassel, Field Grade -Orange/Brown attached. A small wood "surrender tag" attached by wire to the sarute. Used by surrendering Japanese officers to identify the original owner, their hometown, and to request that the family heirloom be safely returned to their descendants.
