L. Ghriskey Flintlock Fullstock Plains Rifle, NVSN, approx. .52 cal., 42'' octagonal barrel, made circa mid-19th century. Marked atop barrel flat ''L. Ghriskey * Phila'' within a punch-dot border flanked by scroll engraving, decoratively engraved lockplate marked ''W. Jacot/1850''; double set triggers, brass triggerguard with long scrolled tang, matching large and fancy brass patchbox with pierced and engraved decoration surmounted by lovely early-style standing federal eagle, matching large brass crescent buttplate with fancy engraved toeplate extending to triggerguard tang, missing sideplate opposite lock, four (of six) brass barrel wedge escutcheons, three matching fancy brass thimbles retain plain hardwood ramrod, with large brass nosecap. Dovetailed front sight missing; German silver rear sight mounted behind vacant original sight dovetail. Varnished, artificially striped walnut stock with checkering at wrist, carved cheekpiece below brass oval nameplate, another vacant brass oval nameplate atop wrist. Condition is fair to good having a smooth brown patina to iron parts and clear markings. Stock is solid with losses around lock area, buttplate tang and midway along barrel on left side, crude repairs, age, wear and minor marks and scratches. A reconversion to flintlock, with bushed touchhole and complete replaced lock that does not fit exactly. A stoutly built rifle made especially for rugged duty on the Western American frontier.
