LARGE 17TH CENTURY BRASS BARRELLED DOG LOCK
BLUNDERBUSS BY MICHAEL RICHARDSON OF BIRMINGHAM, KNOWN SUPPLIER OF GUNS TO HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY. Cal. approx 1 1/2" (2 bore?), 1.85' at muzzle.. NSN. Bbls. 27" canon muzzle brass, stamped w/ early British proofs & "MR" under crown (Michael Richardson). Breech plug tang screw comes up through trigger guard in early style. Very well made steel dog lock w/ rebated & chamfered flat plate has inset pan. Frizzen filed w/ scrolled stop. Feather spring is also file decorated on lower edge & has heart & spear finial. Cock is also flat w/ well filed reinforced area at neck. Pivoting dog also has file decoration. Lock & cock are engraved w/ well cut lg. open scroll w/ acanthus highlights. "RICHARDSON" is engraved at bottom of plate in front of cock. Blacksmith made trigger guard has fancy finial. Sheet brass buttplate has extremely long top strap & is affixed to stock w/ iron nails. Fancy scrolled brass sideplate affixes to lock w/ three screws. Walnut stock has raised carving around bbl. tang, extends to band behind muzzle & is pinned to bbl. Old but probably not original ramrod w/ brass head is held by 1 plain brass pipe & hole through stock. CONDITION: good. Bbl. cleaned many years ago has toned back to a golden/mustard brown. Lock also cleaned, is silver gray w/ scattered like pitting. Stock is probably a mid 19th century replacement as styling does not match period of gun. It retains most of what is possibly its original finish w/ some added oil over scattered marks & dings. Lock is operable. According to Heer, Michael Richardson worked in Birmingham between 1680-85 & was a supplier to Hudson's bay company. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19077/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,500.
