BY A. V. LEBEDA OF PRAGUE. Cal. 58. Eight groove rifling. NSN. The 29" tapered octagon bbl. is gold inlaid w/ maker's name & address along w/ S# "685" between sprays of scroll. Bbl. is fitted w/ 3 leaf fancy rear sight w/ nicely engraved & shaped finial which is marked for 100, 200 & 300 meters; along w/ lg. silver front sight. Bbl. has underrib & rosewood ramrod is held by 2 plain pipes & matching thimble. Scroll engraved patent breech is inlaid w/ 2 gold bands as well as 2 platinum bands & has vented platinum blowout. Breech iron w/ fine semi relief engraved scroll has gold inlaid portrait of roebuck on top. Front spring lock w/ flat faced hammer is also beautifully engraved w/ about 40% coverage varying size shaded scroll within geometric borders as counterpoint to well detailed hunting scene of a pack of dogs attacking a Russian boar in open woodlands. "LEBEDA" is gold inlaid in a scroll flourish behind this scene. Trigger plate fitted w/ dbl. set triggers has scroll engraved pineapple type finial. Steel trigger guard w/ horn rear & tang is also nicely engraved w/ a scene of 2 stags; 1 downed by hound, the other escaping. Half stock of well figured European walnut measures 14" over steel buttplate w/ long scroll engraved top tang which has additional engraving of eagle in its nest w/ captured pigeon. An interesting folding rear sight, adj. for windage & elevation, is at top of grip behind a vacant silver crestplate. Stock also features horn tip, slightly swept right hand cheekpiece & semi fancy checkering at grip & forend. A wide sling loop is on toeline matching that on middle ramrod pipe. CONDITION: very good as partially refinished. Bbl. retaining a fair amount of what appears to be its original brown w/ cleaning highlights & scattered oxidation. Lock & other metal parts show cleaning overall & retain a smooth brown patina. Engraving remains sharp & clear. Stock retains nearly all of an old oil refinish w/ a few light subsequent marks. Checkering recut. Bore is very good to fine, shiny w/ some scattered pits. Lock & triggers are good. A fine rifle that w/ some work on the front sight should shoot exceptionally well. (01-20598/MGM).
