LARGE CALIBER SHORT BARREL BORED SMOOTH
PERCUSSION RIFLE BY SAMUEL & C. SMITH. Cal. 69. S# 3765. The 24" octagon Damascus barrel is engraved "Saml. & C. Smith Princes Street Leicester Square London" (1834-69) on top of flat which has one standing three nested folding leaf rear sight and small bead front dovetailed through. Barrels are fitted with underrib holding beaded ramrod pipes, front with sling eye. Hickory ramrod has brass head and tail (worm under cap). Bottom of barrel is stamped with London black powder proofs, S# and original gauge "20". Patent breech is nicely scroll engraved and has unvented platinum blow out. Breech iron with integral fence is near fully engraved with very well cut shaded scroll. Front spring lock is fitted with flat faced serpentine hammer with stylized dolphin head and back sliding safety. Lockplate is engraved with attenuated acanthus scroll which does not match scroll on hammer. Center of lock is engraved with maker's name and address. "PATENT 3352" is in front of hammer. Trigger plate has stylized pineapple finial and is fitted with double set triggers. The trigger guard has 2" straight portion at front of bow, tang is curled to form pistol grip. Trigger guard engraving matches that on lock. Stock of well streaked European walnut measures 14" over steel buttplate with long top tang engraved with S#, scroll matching lock and the head of a wild boar, the quarry for which this rifle was probably made. Stock features swept right hand check piece, flat top grip checkering and silver nose cap. Stock attaches to barrel with captive side bolt through oval silver escutcheons. CONDITION: good as refinished. Barrel retaining most of an old rebrown. Other metal parts are light gray patina with some color hardening visible where protected. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish, with many marks, details softened. Bore is shiny, rebored to smooth. Lock and triggers are fine. Converted from flint. (01-21906/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
