LARGE COLLECTION OF 1ST MAINE CAVALRY IMAGES &

MEMORABILIA. This wonderful grouping was collected by lifelong 1st Maine cavalry collector Glen Gagne who methodically bought every fine identified image he could of this hard fought regiment. Most of the images were found in Maine near where unit was recruited, many came from other early Maine collectors like Tom MacDonald & Bedford Hayes; many have tags or notes from MacDonald & Hayes. You will not find a better group of 1st ME Cavalry images:
1. Signed CDV (verso) Alfred E. McPhail, Co. H wearing sword belt and cavalry saber. Accompanied by silk reunion ribbon, ladder badge, 1909 dated & initialed GAR watch fob.
2. Two CDVs, one signed ad lieutenant Thaddeus Little, entered service 1861 as private, several promotions, severely wounded at Sailor’s Creek April 6, 1865. There is 2nd CDV of enlisted man with shell jacket also thought to be Little.
3. Half Plate tintype of Ruel Rogers with his father Francis, from Industry Maine. Fine condition with crisp fine detail in good case.
4. Sixth plate tintype in half case, Daniel M. Foster, Skowhegan, Maine. Very good sharp image with American flag backdrop.
5. Quarter plate tintype in half case, Henry W. Bailey, Chesterville Maine, full view in uniform with saber and “ME” on cap above cavalry insignia. Good condition, case missing cover glass.
6. CDV size tin type, Corporal James Littlefield, full view with camp scene backdrop, good overall.
7. 7. CDV Albert Stimpson, Co. K, very good, Bath Maine photographer.
8. Two ninth plate tintypes of Charles C. Palmer (Exeter, Maine) and stencil, one image in uniform, the other civilian, Charles died as POW January 1865.
9. 7” x 9” salt paper civilian pose of George W. York sergeant Co. I, KIA Ely’s Ford Virginia February 1864, water stained mount.
10. CDV mounted small tintype, Samuel E. Griffin, signed on verso, WIA Aldie, VA 6-17-1863.
11. CDV postwar, Gilman B. Elder wearing fraternal garb, Lewiston photographer, very good.
12. CDV size tintype, Lorenzo Evans, Bangor photographer, very good.
13. CDV Charles D. Day, Augusta photographer, very good.
14. CDV John P. Cram, Bangor photographer, posed with pistol & saber, fair condition with poor contrast.
15. CDV, Capt. John P. Carson, signed on verso, Augusta photographer, very good.
16. CDV Capt. John D. Myrick, Augusta photographer, good.
17. CDV Charles Whitehouse, North Vassalboro photographer, very good.
18. 8” x 6” albumen, seated view with slouch hat on table, Alonzo Pratt, Co. L was wounded at “Ground Squirrel Bridge” May 11, 1864, was captured and died from wounds at Andersonville August 15, 1864, very good.
19. Pair of framed colored portraits of Alonzo Pratt & his widow. Alonzo died Andersonville and is buried at National Cemetery there in grave No. 5698.
20. 8” x 6” albumen Lt. John R. Andrews, fine image wearing officer’s shell jacket with slouch hat & insignia.
21. 11” x 8” albumen reunion photo of about 100 1st Maine cavalry survivors, Brunswick Maine 1882, with 52page pamphlet.
22. Cabinet card Capt. Samuel W. Lane, with GAR membership badge.
23. Cabinet card Maj. George M. Brown wearing GAR membership badge.
24. 5.5” x 4” photo mounted on larger board, Henry J. Varney, Skowhegan photographer wearing GAR membership badge and scarce 1st ME cavalry association badge. CONDITION: good to very good or as noted. (02-16888/JS). $8,000-12,000.
