OF THE 5th INFANTRY DIVISION. This group contains many items belonging to PFC Piwonski during his service in WWII. He was a Mortarman in the 10th Infantry Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division. Among Piwonski’s awards was the Bronze Star, which was awarded for service in the fall of 1944. He used his 60mm mortar effectively to suppress enemy activity while under small arms, mortar, and artillery fire. There are several pages of copies of photographs showing Piwonski during his service in the European Theater. There are copies of photographs showing him in the uniforms offered below. This extensive lot belonging to PFC Piwonski includes his “Ike” jacket with ribbon bars and all appropriate insignia, including 10th Infantry Regiment DIs, CIB award, 5th Infantry Division patch, and more. His M1 front seam-fixed bail helmet had an OD-painted finish and a 5th Infantry Division diamond painted on the front. The helmet retains its original net covering, liner, and chinstrap. His group further includes an OD carrying case with an M10 plotting board inside; a haversack, dated 1943, with places that he served, including the landing at Omaha Beach; an altered WWI 45 auto holster, in which he carried a captured P38 in; a canteen with cover; his gasmask & storage bag; a wooden field rations box; an M60 mortar base assembly; a carrying case for an M60 mortar sighting device; a well-worn field jacket; two OD scarfs; a khaki tie; an OD overseas cap; a khaki overseas cap; a cold weather insulated hood cap; a khaki shirt with an 5th Infantry Division patch; a winter-weight OD shirt with an 5th Infantry Division patch; two insulated helmet liners; three pairs of winter-weight OD pants; two pairs of leather puttees; two pairs of summer-weight OD pants; an OD duffle bag; an OD waterproof bag; two khaki belts; his Bronze Star, Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal; a 5th Infantry Division patch; and finally, his casket flag. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of photographs, newspaper clippings, copies of book pages, internet information, and publications all dealing with Piwonski’s service with the 5th Infantry Division. CONDITION: generally, items show light to moderate wear, as one would expect. The field jacket shows moderate to heavy wear, and the wool scarves have some insect damage. (02-21779/BF). $2,500-4,000.
