LATE 19TH CENTURY MILITIA UNIFORMS GENERALLY

ASSOCIATED WITH THE KENTISH GUARD OF RHODE ISLAND. This group of uniforms appears to date from the 1880’s to just past the turn of the century. Most of the uniforms seem to have an association with the Kentish Guards, a well known Militia organization from East Greenwich, RI. The group includes 1 Officer’s frock coat with white & gold bullion collar trim. There is one row of bullion adorning the sleeves. There are 9 Kentish Guard buttons down the front and 6 on the tail. The interior is lined with white cotton. / 1 Private’s frock coat with white shoulder tabs, white cuff trim, and white piping. The 9 button coat is missing 5 buttons but 3 loose buttons are attached to the coat. The cuff buttons and shoulder tab buttons are small Kentish Guard types. There are also 6 coat sized Kentish Guard buttons on the tails. The coat is lined with white polished cotton and is quilted. / 1 Enlisted sack coat with 5 1872-1902 buttons down the front and 3 incorrect staff buttons on each sleeve. Coat has a sewn hem and a dark blue wool lining. / 1 Dark blue officers double breasted frock coat with 18 buttons down the front (4 missing). Each cuff has 3 small Kentish Guard buttons and the tail has 4 coat sized buttons. The shoulders have sewn on attachments for epaulets. Black polished cotton lining with some quilting. / 1 Pair of blue wool pants with 1" wide white wool stripes down the outside of each leg. Pants have a 5 button fly and provisions for a belt. / 2 Pair of blue wool trousers with an adjustment strap at the rear waistband. 5 Button fly on one and 4 button with a snap on the other. / 1 Officers belt & buckle dating from 1880-1902 complete with sword straps and M1851 style buckle made by Henry V. Allien. CONDITION: all uniforms show some degree of wear and most have some moth damage. Several buttons appear to have been resewn or replaced. One of the blue wool pants has severe moth damage.
