LATE FEDERAL ERA EAGLE HEAD SWORD BY UPSOM.
Overall length: 39". Blade length: 33". Blade has a single wide fuller and is etched over half its length with various military, foliate & patriotic motifs, including a large spread wing eagle with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” ribbon. There is an oval just below the ricasso that reads “Richard Upsom and Co. New York”. A classic gilded brass 5 ball style hilt with a downturned quillon. There are 5 balls on the guard branch and 5 balls on the knuckle bow. Well articulated eagle head pommel and reeded bone grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with heavier oxidation near the tip. The etching retains much of its gilded highlights and the blued field can still be easily discerned. Hilt retains 40% of its original gilding. Grip has a single 1/4" tight age crack. (02-19198/BF). $600-800.
