LATE JOHN MANTON DOUBLE FLINT SHOTGUN.

Cal. 16 Ga. (.670 dia.) S# 10200 (CA 1831). Made half a decade after the percussion system had become popular for sporting guns this late style flintlock gun has 32" skelp twist barrels engraved "John Manton and Son Dover Street" on raised wide game rib. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with London blackpowder proofs for 17 Ga and with S#'s. Case hardened inset patent breeches with platinum touch holes have well cut scroll engraving on top flanked by platinum lines. Breech iron is also well engraved with full coverage shaded scroll and acanthus. Locks with chamfered plates and rebated square tails are fitted with late style French cocks, waterproof "V" pans, bridled roller frizzens with patent flash gates that are engraved "Jno. Manton & Son Patent" on fronts. Large rollers are on feather springs which have bulbous finials. Lockplates have vertical feather engraving on chamfers as well as open scroll on faces. Cocks and frizzens are engraved to match, each lockplate is engraved with maker's name over "Patent" in front of cocks. Trigger plate has scroll engraved pineapple finial, trigger guard with scroll on bow has S# on tang. Very nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut, swan neck stock measures 14 5/8" over steel buttplate with scroll engraved top tang. Stock attaches to barrels with captive side bolt through oval silver escutcheons. Rosewood ramrod with brass head and tail (worm under tail) mounts through two plain pipes and pineapple thimble. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: 2 1/16". DAC: 1 9/16". CAST: about 1/2" off. LOP: 14 5/8". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 2 oz. CONDITION: fine as lightly refinished. Barrels retaining nearly all of a very good rebrown with fine definition to pattern. Locks retain traces of original case hardening where protected. A considerable amount of charcoal blue remains on trigger plate, trigger guard as well as buttplate tang which may be original. Stock retains most of a light oil refinish over some scattered light marks. Bores are fine, shiny over a few scattered light pits. Right lock is crisp, left frizzen is a bit sluggish and does not close tightly (cam shows considerable wear). This fine gun would most likely make and excellent shooter. (01-21896/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,500.
