LC SMITH A2 GRADE SXS SHOTGUN.
Cal. 12 Ga. S# 984. Bbls. 30" of Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel. The A2 Ejector Gun was the 2nd highest grade of LC Smith shotgun produced by Hunter Arms Company prior to 1913. The LC Smith Production Records by James Stubendieck states that only 213 A-2 Grade guns were mfg. 1891-1916. He further states that "Because of the elaborate engraving, the A-2 is highly sought by the LC Smith collector". Sidelock action w/ special order engraving showing hunting scenes on lock w/ vignettes of quail, hunting dog chasing woodcock & mallards on right side, left side has vignettes of woodcock, hunting dogs & partridge. Scenes & vignettes are surrounded by fancy borders, arabesque scroll, geometric designs w/ rose & scroll engraving on upper & lower areas of action & trigger guard bow. Action is made w/out safety having dbl. triggers & selective ejectors. Bottom of bbls. is stamped "A2". Monte Carlo half pistol grip stock of finely grained Circassian walnut w/ elaborate segmented fleur-de-lis hand checkering. Splinter forearm is of post 1913 vintage replacement marked "FIELD" w/ added number to match the gun. LOP: 14 5/8" over added London style solid red pad. DAC: 1 13/16". DAMC: 2". DAH: 2 7/8". Stock is cast off. Bbls. have front & mid beads. Chambers & forcing cones are lengthened. WEIGHT: 8 lbs., 0.1 oz. Bore diameters: right - .728 , left - .730 Choke constrictions: right - .032, left - .013. Minimum wall thickness: Right bbl: .029 at 8-1/2" from muzzle. Left bbl: .030 at 11" from muzzle. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 2 Marlin Firearms Company letters from the Cody Firearms Museum. 1 Letter states the following: "The statistical data for L.C. Smith Shotgun, serial number 984, as extracted from original L.C. Smith Company records housed in the museum, are as follows: A2 Grade / 12 gauge / 30-inch barrels / 7 pounds, 12 ounces / 14 1/4" x 1 1/2" x 2 1/4" / Ordered on February 22, 1893 / Shipped on September 30, 1893 / Sold to H. McM. Ex c/o Von Lengerke & Antoine / Extra set of barrels, A2, 12 gauge, 30-inches, 14" x 2 1/4"pg. 38 ordered March 1 1894 / Shipped to Von Lengerke & Antoine on March 1, 1894.". The 2nd letter states the following: "A2 Grade / 12 gauge / 30-inch / shipped from the company 1892". CONDITION: bbls. retain 40% dull blue w/ fading in carry areas showing spots of freckling, light pitting & scratches. Action finish has faded to mottled silver gray. Stock has moderately worn finish & checkering showing dents & handling marks w/ sm. chips & cracks behind locks & top tang. Replacement forearm has moderate finish & checkering wear w/ chips at iron. Action is off face w/ bbls. loose on frame. Bores are generally bright. Bbls produce a dull tone indicating looseness. (01-17418/DS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
