Antique American Flintlock Kentucky Rifle, by Leman of Lancaster, PA, NVSN, .40 cal., double set triggers, unmarked 32'' octagonal barrel with standard dovetailed open sights retained by two steel keys and a pin; floral engraved lockplate with integral pan and faceted frizzen is stepped at rear and marked ''Leman/Lancaster, PA'', engraved swan-neck hammer; brass furniture includes small sideplate, finger-rest trigger guard, crescent buttplate with elongated bottom tang having a button to release the floral-engraved and openwork patchbox door, nosecap, and three ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hickory ramrod; three vacant oval German-silver inlays at wrist, cheekpiece and stock bottom and a shield at right-side stock comb; striped maple fullstock is checkered at wrist, has raised panels at either side of lock and a carved cheekpiece. Condition is very good, the barrel showing a dark aged patina with pitting around touchhole, the lock with smooth gunmetal color, the brass with light age patina. Engraving is clear, maker's name on lockplate is only partially legible. Stock is smooth with good checkering and striping. There is a secure 3'' crack emanating from the right side behind the nosecap, another thru both sides at buttstock toe, a third running from rear of barrel tang around left side to above front trigger, and a later thin coat of varnish; a supply of linen patches is in patchbox and a flint in the hammer jaws. The rifle appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole and original parts. Action functions (but does not hold cock), smoothbore is clean. Est.: $900-$1,200.
