DESCRIPTION
Archive of documents concerning the activities of one John .L. Springston, Possibly John Leak Springston, Cherokee lawyer, interpreter, and activist (1844-1929). Contract dated September 1911: Concerning an agreement between himself and one Mose Te-hee, in which Springston was paid a commission for helping Te-hee acquire rental money on his land. This was due to Te-hee "being [a] full-blood Cherokee Indian, and unable to transact business of this nature." Letter from Indian Superintendent to Mose Te-Hee Dated November 1911: Stating that a guardian to administer his payments on rentals was necessary as the "rolls" stated he was over eighteen years of age, but not yet of age of majority. Check dated December 1911: From Te-hee to Springston for services outlined in contact. Letter dated April 1913: From Springton to Congress member James S. Davenport regarding a Civil War pension application. Letter dated April 1913: From J.L. Davenport, Commissioner of the Department of the Interior, to James S. Davenport stating that Springston had been disbarred in 1903 and was not considered an agent or attorney. **Good condition overall. Some staining and wear to paper especially on edges and corners.
