M. JAVELLE FRENCH DA 11mm PINFIRE REVOLVER.

Cal. 11mm Pinfire. S# 384. Bbl. 5 1/4" octagon with dovetailed bead sight; notched top of hammer for rear sight. Mfg. by Javelle Et (and) Guichard in St. Etienne, France from 1860-1880; patented 1861. References list offerings in 9mm and 12mm yet cambers of the unfluted 6 round cylinder measure 11mm as does bore. Designed for quick, easy cylinder removal as Michel Javelle envisioned users carrying extra loaded cylinders for rapid recharging. Lever under barrel releases clamp assembly on cylinder pivot which allows barrel to pivot forward for cylinder removal. Cylinder is numbered 384; barrel normally numbered on lower flat in front of trigger guard, but as this example has extensive engraving, that area is engraved as well along with "JAVELLE M St. ETIENNE" plus "Bte S.G.D.G.". Likely some internal areas are numbered as well, but not disassembled to search; one reference refers to a trigger number. These revolvers were used by both sides during the Civil War. Operation is single or double action. One piece saw handle grip is capped with iron having lanyard loop. Very well made, engraved and deep Nitre bluing. CONDITION: Good general antique appearance with patina, peppery oxidation, light pitting at muzzle plus light chips at top of grip; traces of bright blue throughout. Fair to good bore with lesser conditioned chambers. Fine mechanical functioning with no looseness. (01-21689/NW). ANTIQUE. $650-900.
