M1881 INFANTRY OFFICER’S HELMET & SHOULDER

BOARDS, M1889 SUN HELMET & M1872 OFFICER’S CHAPEAU.
1) M1881. An Infantry officer’s spiked dress helmet featuring a gilded brass spike, base & chain. Crossed rifle side buttons w/ a lg. eagle front plate featuring a central shield w/ a “5” surmounting crossed rifles. Black 4 piece body. Leather sweatband. Red silk interior liner marked, “BENT & BUSH BOSTON”. Helmet includes a pair of 5th Infantry paddle style braided epaulettes w/ white pillows. Pillows have a silver bullion “5” in the center flanked by captain’s bars. CONDITION: helmet shows light wear overall. Epaulettes show light wear & could use a cleaning.
2) M1889. A US Army sun helmet commonly referred to as the M1889. The M1887 had a white body which was modified to khaki 2 years later creating the M1889. 4 Piece body w/ a pair of 2 piece visors front & back. Interior lining is green. Crown lining is tan w/ a sm. paper label that reads, “PATENTED MAY 2, 1899.”. CONDITION: body of helmet shows a few scattered minor stains, otherwise it is quite solid.
3) M1872. A classic example of an Army M1872 officer’s chapeau w/ rain cover & partial box. Chapeau has a black body w/ an ostrich feather in the top. The bullion side lozenge insignia has a central American eagle w/ a staff officer button above. Full sweatband. Interior liner reads, “SHANNON, MILLER & CRANE (eagle) 46 MAIDEN LANE NEW YORK”. Rain cover is tarred linen. Dark green cardboard box. CONDITION: hat generally shows light wear w/ some slight insect damage. Rain cover is missing 1 strap & is a bit worn at the top. Box is in 3 pieces & is in need of restoration. (02-15776/BF). $800-1,000.
