MARTINI-HENRY MK 1 2ND MODEL 1873 SERVICE RIFLE.
Cal. .450/577. NSN. Bbl. 32 1/2". A scarce example of an MK1 surviving in unconverted condition. Most MK1s were converted, after the introduction of the MK2 modifications, to the initial issuance of Martini Henry rifles. This rifle likely had a long & storied service life including action during the Zulu Wars of 1879. Bbl. features a side lug for bayonet, folding sight & numerous proofs on left side of the bbl. Receiver marked "(crown) / V.R. / ENFIELD / 1873 / (crowned broad arrow) / I.". All iron parts appear complete & bear appropriate ordnance markings. Ramrod is intact. Forestock is complete. Buttstock has a circular ordnance stamp that reads "R (crown) M ENFIELD WD (2 broad arrows)" all above "1". The opposite side of the stock, bears the stamping "IB103" which is likely a regimental/rack number. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: documents including information about Martini Henry rifles & a copy of the original purchase receipt for this gun in 1986 from Brian Knapp, noted English arms dealer. CONDITION: bbl. receiver & other iron components show an extraordinarily high percentage of original blued finish. Stock shows numerous dents & dings attesting to its long service life though no major faults can be seen. Bore is fine w/ strong rifling. (01-17217/BF). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,200.
