MASSIVE AND WELL KNOWN HIGHEST QUALITY CONFEDERATE

D-GUARD BOWIE EX-FLAYDERMAN COLLECTION. 24" Overall, 18.5" double edged wasp waist spear point blade. Not only is this knife pictured & described in Norm Flayderman’s exemplary text “The Bowie Knife”; it is also pictured in 1961 Life magazine article in full color page on the wall behind Mr. Flayderman flanked by the best Civil War regalia from his collection. There are a handful of extremely fine condition Confederate D-guard bowies in their original sheaths that most collectors covet & know location in published texts by heart. This is one of those few truly iconic examples w/ few peers. Heavy iron tapering 2” “D-guard”, striped tiger maple grip w/ pewter ferrule & flat rnd. copper pommel cap, unique sheet tinned iron sheath w/ a leather veneer cover bound by riveted tinned iron sheet strips, 2 large riveted iron carrying rings, bulbous flat lobe drag. Exemplary skill in craftsmanship is rarely seen in every aspect of manufacture of any Confederate knife, this example has it all. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: "Life" magazine from 1961 and tags from a James D. Julia auction. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, blade is gray/bright w/ areas of light pitting, sharpening, guard & sheath have smooth iron patina, grip has hand worn patina, leather veneer is mostly missing on one side of sheath but mostly intact on the other, leather remains dry, scuffed & stained. Regardless, this is a superior condition Confederate knife. (02-15520/JS). $8,000-12,000.
