METROPOLITAN ARMS NAVY REVOLVER INSCRIBED TO
CONFEDERATE GENERAL RANDALL LEE GIBSON. Cal. 36. S# 1800. Bbl. 7 1/2". This is one of several guns noted w/ spurious inscriptions to General Gibson, all in same hand. Regardless of inscription, this appears to be a good honest, scarce Colt copy made by Metropolitan Arms Co. of New York w/ original ivory grips. Randall Lee Gibson (1832-1892) was a prominent Louisiana politician & Tulane University’s 1st president. He graduated from Yale University in 1853, returning to New Orleans to study law at school, at what is now Tulane University. On August 13th 1861, Gibson was commissioned Col. of 13th Louisiana Infantry, promoted to Brigadier Gen. Jan 11th 1864. CONDITION: good to very good overall, metal is overall dark gray mottled patina w/ traces of finish in protected areas. Bbl. address & S#s all discernable. The 1862 New Orleans naval battle rolled scene on cyl. is about 1/2 discernable. Gun appears original w/ matching S#s, except on wedge which is unnumbered & most likely restoration. Certifiable antique elephant ivory grips are unnumbered & original to this revolver w/ hand worn patina. Mechanically fine w/ crisp, rifled bore w/ areas of pitting. (01-18198/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
