MIDWESTERN PERCUSSION TARGET / HUNTING

RIFLE BY H. H . SCHULTE OF PITTSBURG, PA. Cal. 45. NSN. The 33" octagon bbl. fitted with underrib has accessory bronze bullet starter. Top flat is marked "H.H. SCHULTE" "PITTSBURG" (working 1868-75). Rear of bbl. is fitted with unusual elevation adjustable aperture rear sight. Adjustments are made by tightening a screw which compresses a spring to either raise or lower the sight disk, which also has dovetailed windage adjustment. Front sight is a tunnel type with fine bead. Front spring percussion lock with large serpentine dolphin head hammer is also marked with maker's name and has some foliate engraving within geometric borders. Triggers are double set. Walnut half stock is German silver mounted except for pewter nose cap. It has a small swept cheekpiece on left side and widely spaced checkering is at grip and forend. Mounts include trigger guard with two spurs, crescent buttplate with 4 1/2" shaped return, circular patch box on right side of butt with well shaped finials, and a nicely shaped sideplate. There is a rectangular silver crest plate with clipped corners on toe line. Ramrod is held by two plain pipes (front missing). CONDITION: very fine but in need of minor repair. Bbl. retaining over 85% original brown. Bullet starter is nicely toned. Breech and lockplate retain most of their bright polish, perhaps with some cleaning. Stock retains most of its oil finish with a good scattering of marks; checkering lightly worn. Bore is bright and shiny. Triggers and lock work well. German silver is nicely toned. Bbl. sight is missing. Ramrod missing front half. PROVENANCE: By descent, from the Albert Boardman II of Rye, N.Y. (01-20811/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-2,000.
